Non-formal Learning

All the activities of Klong Toh Lem Academy Foundation (KTLA) turn around one core topic: education. In particular, KTLA focuses on informal, non-formal education and life-long learning.

Informal education differs from the formal education carried out in school because it lacks an explicit intention of teaching, whilst non-formal education implies an explicit intention of teaching but outside of the formal education institutions. For example, by sharing an apartment with other people I can learn how to be considerate of other people’s needs and how to respect other people’s privacy. Since my learning process does not come from an explicit intention of teaching/learning but by the simple fact of living together, this example suits well our definition of informal learning. This type of “collateral” education represents a core element of all volunteering projects, where volunteers learn by being exposed to another culture naturally, through experience. On the other hand, if you are a millennial and you hold a class for you analogic mother on how to send an email, you are doing non-formal education. You explicitly teach/learn, but you don’t do so in a formal institution.

Informal & Non-Formal Education

With skills and attitudes connected to informal and non-formal education being more and more recognized in the job market, it’s becoming a worldwide trend to complement formal education with other practical experiences. Volunteering can be a good opportunity to challenge oneself in this sense and KTLA gives the chance to both local and foreign volunteers to dive into this experience by serving the needs of the local community.

KTLA targets primarily young people in believing that informal and non-formal education can be a key element in building up the confidence needed to make them engaged, responsible and pro-active adults. The goal of our educational programs is to teach children and youths how to love learning and to consequently provide them with a flexible and dynamic mindset needed for facing the challenges of our fast-paced world. Our non-formal education programs, built with the help of international volunteers, include creative English teaching, arts, sports, environment and Islamic education. All our activities are carried out with a special focus on harmony with the nature; they are conducted primarily outside, often in the mangrove forest of Klong Toh Lem.

The activities of KTLA are essential when looking closely at the local context. Focusing on local young people’s mindset and providing interesting and meaningful activities is important to fight idleness and lack of opportunities in a rural village. Failing in providing young people with such purposeful activities can results in issues like drugs consumption, or ultimate depopulation of the village in the next generations. Moreover, the gap in the quality level of formal education between rural and urban areas in Thailand creates further need for pairing up the school system with outside-class educational activities. Those are also a way to enrich the personality of young people with teaching methods tailored to their needs and focused on learning aspects overlooked in schools curricula such as teamwork, leadership, social responsibility and other life skills.

But KTLA does not only focus on young people. On the contrary, we advocate for life-long learning, meaning that learning never stops: not in a classroom, not in a school, not with a certain age. We encourage adults to participate in educational activities both through informal and non-formal methods. People from Kok Payom seem to have a natural disposition for this type of behavior: they are always ready to participate in activities aimed at improving the living standards of their communities and their families and to try out new possible solutions to the issues that affect their village. KTLA actively supports and learn from them and hopes to maintain and constantly improve this attitude through its activities.

การเรียนรู้แบบไม่เป็นทางการและการเรียนรู้นอกระบบ

ด้วยทักษะและทัศนคติที่เชื่อมโยงกับการศึกษาแบบไม่เป็นทางการและการศึกษานอกระบบจึงเป็นที่รู้จักมากขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ ในตลาดงานจึงกลายเป็นเทรนด์ทั่วโลกในการส่งเสริมการศึกษาอย่างเป็นทางการกับประสบการณ์ภาคปฏิบัติอื่น ๆ การเป็นอาสาสมัครอาจเป็นโอกาสที่ดีในการท้าทายตนเองในแง่นี้และ มูลนิธิคลองโต๊ะเหล็มอะคาเดมีให้โอกาสแก่อาสาสมัครทั้งในและต่างประเทศในการสัมผัสกับประสบการณ์นี้ผ่านการตอบสนองความต้องการของชุมชนท้องถิ่น

กิจกรรมของมูลนิธิคลองโต๊ะเหล็มอะคาเดมีนั้นมีความสำคัญเมื่อมองเจาะลึกถึงบริบทท้องถิ่น การมุ่งเน้นไปที่ความคิดของคนหนุ่มสาวในท้องถิ่นและการจัดกิจกรรมที่น่าสนใจและมีความหมายเป็นสิ่งสำคัญที่จะต่อสู้กับความว่างเปล่าและการขาดโอกาสในชุมชนแห่งนี้ โดยการที่ไม่ให้คนหนุ่มสาวได้ทำกิจกรรมอาจส่งผลให้เกิดปัญหา เช่น การเสพยาเสพติด หรือการลดจำนวนประชากรของหมู่บ้านในรุ่นต่อ ๆ ไป นอกจากนี้ช่องว่างในระดับคุณภาพของการศึกษาอย่างเป็นทางการระหว่างสังคมชนบทและสังคมเมืองในประเทศไทย ทำให้เกิดความต้องการเพิ่มเติมในการผสมผสานระบบการศึกษาในโรงเรียนกับกิจกรรมการศึกษานอกห้องเรียน สิ่งเหล่านี้ยังเป็นวิธีที่จะเสริมสร้างบุคลิกภาพของคนหนุ่มสาวด้วยวิธีการสอนที่ปรับให้เข้ากับความต้องการของพวกเขา และมุ่งเน้นการเรียนรู้ที่นอกเหนือจากหลักสูตรของโรงเรียน เช่น การทำงานเป็นทีม ความเป็นผู้นำ ความรับผิดชอบต่อสังคมและทักษะชีวิตอื่น ๆ

มูลนิธิคลองโต๊ะเหล็มอะคาเดมีไม่เพียงแต่มุ่งเน้นไปที่คนหนุ่มสาว ในขณะเดียวกันเราสนับสนุนการเรียนรู้ตลอดชีวิต ซึ่งหมายความว่าการเรียนรู้ไม่เคยหยุดนิ่ง ไม่ได้อยู่เพียงแค่ในห้องเรียน ไม่ใช่ในโรงเรียน ไม่ใช่เฉพาะในวัยเรียน เรายังสนับสนุนให้ผู้ใหญ่มีส่วนร่วมในกิจกรรมการศึกษาทั้งแบบไม่เป็นทางการและการเรียนรู้นอกห้องเรียน ซึ่งชาวบ้านในชุมชนบ้านโคกพยอมนั้นมีความใกล้ชิดกับธรรมชาติในทัศนคติดังต่อไปนี้: พวกเขาพร้อมที่จะมีส่วนร่วมในกิจกรรมต่าง ๆ เพื่อปรับปรุงมาตรฐานการครองชีพของชุมชนและครอบครัวของพวกเขา รวมถึงลองหาวิธีแก้ปัญหาใหม่ ๆ มูลนิธิคลองโต๊ะเหล็มอะคาเดมีให้การสนับสนุนและเรียนรู้ต่อพวกเขาอย่างเต็มที่ โดยเราหวังว่าจะรักษาและปรับปรุงทัศนคติเหล่านี้ตลอดเวลาผ่านการดำเนินกิจกรรมต่าง ๆ
